We run a self help group from our office once a week.
2. Mental health education/promotion

We believe that most mental health education lies on shaky ground. Often service user involvement in organisations is very tokenistic. The politics of mental health are confined to issues of power, funding, the type and quality of services ect. What is widely realised is that psychaitry's core body of 'knowledge' has political and social implications (labelling, diagonisis and treatment). We believe that collectively we have the power to effect 'some' change. Broadly speaking mental health education as it stands now takes on three forms, Evidence based mental health promotion, i.e precriptions for leisure. mental health awareness training, usually run by professionals who discuss what each diagnosis 'looks like' to outsiders and acedemic courses which focuses on policies and legislation.
We feel that mental health education should encompass both the medical model of mental health and the social model. We also feel that learning by being exposed to service user experiences generates a greater understanding and awareness of the issues involved.
